This book tells of moments in Arnold Bennett’s life as seen through the eyes of his life long friend artist Frederick Marriott. Marriott wrote an affectionate and amusing memoir which John Shapcott has studied to take a fresh look at Bennett’s life.

We learn anout Bennett’s early years in London and the crucial role of Marriott in introducing his friend to yje artists of the day. Marriott remained at his friend’s side through many key moments, and his memoir offers a unique insight into Bennett’s private life.

It is the first publication of the entire Marriott manuscript, and with an extensive addition of illustrations and notes, it offers an entertaining and informative biography.

John Shapcott is Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Keele and a Vice-President of the Arnold Bennett Society. He is responsible for a number of critical editions of novels and stories of Bennett, as we as editing two Arnold Bennett Companions. his major study of Melvyn Bragg’s Lake District novels, Grains of Sandcame out in 2015.
